Position sensors

The Gefran position transmitters we offer are made of durable materials that allow them to be used in most industrial applications, and even in the most adverse ones.

The bodies of the position sensors are made of various materials, such as anodized aluminum, AISI 316 stainless steel or PBT plastic, mainly used in the automotive sector, resistant to UV radiation, salt spray, acids and other aggressive agents.

Being the result of years of experience and close cooperation with the best European research universities and research centers, each transmitter has been designed and manufactured with features designed to meet the most stringent requirements of the

Main features of position sensors

  • Absolute position measurement: when the system is turned on, the transducer immediately determines the actual position, without the need for mechanical repositioning
  • Long life: from 100 million maneuvers of potentiometric transducers to the virtually unlimited life of HYPERWAVE, magnetostrictive transducers or HALLA EFFECT - due to the lack of contact between the transducer and its position reader.
  • High resolution output signal
  • Easy installation and simple connection to the most popular instruments and PLCs
  • Possibility of simultaneous management of up to 16 position readers on the same transmitter with the indication of travel speed (MK4 series of magnetostrictive sensors in Profinet)

Potentiometric position sensors

The key element in a potentiometric transducer consists of two linear tracks, made of conductive material, having the same length as the maximum displacement to be measured. A movable cursor with two connected sliding contacts (brushes) acts as a bridge between the two tracks and measures the potential difference between the first resistive track and the second. The cursor can be inside or outside the device. In order to ensure a high degree of measurement accuracy, it is necessary to provide a high-quality resistive track. Only in this way does the position of the contact on the path correspond to an accurate and repeatable output voltage value.

Gefran, as a manufacturer of position sensors, also produces the resistive paths in-house, which guarantees their highest quality and thus the accuracy of the sensor measurement. Potentiometric measurement sensors are easy to install and use.

Magnetostrictive position sensors

Magnetostrictive non-contact position sensors - represent a group of high-tech transducers, enabling accurate measurements of the distance traveled and position, without interfering with the measured system. Compared to sensors based on potentiometric technology, they are characterized by significantly higher accuracy.

Modern measurement technology in magnetostrictive position sensors

The evolution of transducer measurement technology is represented by the magnetostrictive position transducer, in which there is no contact between the transducer and the cursor. The measuring element consists of a tube made of a special alloy, surrounded by a copper conductor. The measurement process is carried out through the interaction of mechanical waves and an electromagnetic field. The sensor's electronics send a current pulse of 3 amperes along the tube, in 3 microseconds; the interaction between the current pulse and the magnetic field generated by the position magnet creates a torsion, which extends through the magnetostrictive wire conductor in the form of a torsional mechanical wave. This technique makes it possible to determine the position of the magnet very precisely. With this technology, there is also no wear and tear on the transducer, as there is no contact between its moving parts.
